The Converging Point of Biotechnology, Agriculture, Energy, and Computers
In Computers, there is Electronic Design Automation, which are software tools used to design computer chips. Such tools
reduce the time needed to design computer chips. In Energy, there is a Nanotechnology process to convert coal into cleaner-burning
gasoline and diesel fuel. This process uses heat to separate the coal into individual molecules so that sulfur, nitrogen,
ash, and other impurities can be removed efficiently and inexpensively; the purified coal molecules are then enriched with
hydrogen and transformed into liquid fuel. In Agriculture, there is gene sequencing, which enables scientists to breed or
engineer grains that resist disease, drought, and pests. Gene sequences are lists of genetic building blocks, called nucleotide
bases that make up an organism's chromosomes. In Biotechnology, there are natural, super strong materials and other products
that can be manufactured through the genetic engineering of milk proteins. Two spider genes that make the dragline silk protein
make such materials. Such silk is produced from mammalian cells, splicing the spider genes into cow and hamster cells and
cultivating them. Goat mammary glands, standing in for a spider's spinnerets, can manufacture the silk along with the milk
and secrete tiny silk stands from the animal's body by the bucketful.
The complexity of semiconductor designs has created need for new computer chip design tools called Electronic Design
Automation. The complexity of Biotechnology and genetic engineering for Agriculture will need similar design tools once biological
systems are fully understood.
Fuel cells replace fossil fuels, resulting in cleaner air and water, and ending reliance on foreign oil. Agro-bio technology
creates cheaper and healthier foods. Information Appliances and Portable Devices make information and knowledge available
to where it is needed. In addition, Human-Machine Interface and Virtual Assistants make information and knowledge easier to
find.
Such
technologies enable a society to predominantly learn and earn from home, through Telework, Online Publishing, and E-Commerce.
Electronic Banks will handle financial transactions, with individuals making purchases with Electronic Cash. Automated Factories will customize what individuals purchase to their specifications. Cost and quality
of products and services enable individuals access to the wants and needs, thus resulting in focus on humanitys values.
