Companies in every country are engaged in the business of packaging cultural experiences, and tourism is nothing more than the commodification of cultural experience. Travel for pleasure creates the tourism industry, which represents more than 11 percent of world's Gross Domestic Product, 20 percent projected by 2008. Ten percent of global workforce are employed in jobs generated by travel and tourism industry, with 100 million new jobs generated in ten years.

Public Policy would be wise to create enjoyable experiences for travelers, by increasing and improving small businesses involved in the experience economy, planning and funding cultural activities, and promoting travel and entertainment organizations. This calls for job creation and training, business creation and assistance, and cultural activities and institutions

Apartments in our Future

Apartment buildings should be the leading centers of commerce in the future generation. Because they are places to live for large groups of diverse people, there can be many social interactions, creating many new ideas. Thus, they will have strategic advantages in the Third Wave Economy. Such an economy is information and knowledge based, enabling a network of small flexible businesses that get things done in here-today, gone-tomorrow alliances.

For an apartment dweller, there is little room for holding many products, which means smaller purchases. Instead of buying furniture and other home goods, experiences are main purchases. There are new experience industries and the experience economy to satisfy such purchases. Experience industries include the whole range of cultural activities from travel to entertainment.

The economic advantages of being apartment dweller creates demand for experiences and the resources to satisfy such demand. One strategy for highly profitable apartment buildings uses the experience industry. Having developed a system to create motion pictures of real or imagined experiences, there is a product and related services to be sold into a growing demand. Another profitable strategy is creating businesses involving apartment residents to show nonresidents how to thrive in emerging experience economy, which will be dominated by home shopping, home banking, and building communities from home. Also very important are home broadcasters, home publishers, and even organizing political protests from home.

Another advantage of living in apartment is the potential for many ideas. Treating people in apartment as collections of businesses, there will people bringing information from the outside world in, others taking information from inside and exporting out, others carrying information from one part of business to another part, some people creating crazy ideas (some really powerful and useful), and some who will filter creative ideas as there raised.

What can be more enjoyable than reliving our most enjoyable experiences? With digital technology, we now can. Scanning photographs of ourselves and loved ones into computer, we can make motion pictures of real or fictional experiences. First choose background for experience, then scan pictures of people involved, then detail events of experiences. Get many people creating their own experiences, and combine them into story.
